An ancinet warning specifically for our day! In this episode I walk through Moroni’s urgent spotlight on the Gadianton robbers—a network that infiltrated courts, commerce, and government—and draw a clear line to the subtle ways corruption seeps into modern life. This isn’t fear-mongering; it’s a field guide to staying free in an age where truth is contested and loyalty is for sale.

This is part one in a series on secret societies, secret combinations, and how they actually operate: secrecy and signs, oaths that outrank conscience, and a legal system bent until justice splits in two. Then we shift from headlines to habits. Our framework is simple and hard to fake: become unbribable so power and praise lose leverage; seek truth with relentless curiosity and the Holy Spirit as your compass; reinforce family and community so belonging can’t be weaponized; live by a higher law that makes character a daily practice rather than a slogan; and remember the disproportionate sway of a righteous minority to steady a whole society.

Along the way we connect scripture to the newsfeed without getting trapped in partisan cul-de-sacs. Corruption is not left or right; it is human. That’s why the most radical act is personal conversion to Jesus Christ—choices that make you spiritually dangerous to systems built on fear and favor. By the end, you’ll have practical steps to guard your attention, train your discernment, teach integrity at home, and design a life rooted in courage, honesty, humility, and service.

If this spoke to you, share it with someone who needs hope, subscribe for next week’s episode, and leave a review with one action you’ll take to be unbribable today. Your single choice might steady more people than you think.

Welcome back to Todd Talks, Spirit by Design, where we help you to gain control of your spiritual life and learn from the past so as not to make the same mistakes. Today we're going to talk about something that, although it came from ancient days, gathers information and warnings specifically written for our day. For us, right now. I'm going to dive into the warning about the Gadiant and robbers from the Book of Mormon. Before you assume that this is just another old scripture story, let me explain something important. The prophet Moroni did something specific for us when he wrote about them. He essentially stopped the narrative and said, Hey, you there in the future, listen up and pay attention. I'm writing this for your day, for you. The lessons we can learn from this story can help us survive in our day. What destroyed ancient civilizations can destroy modern ones too. Today's episode is not about fear, it's about clarity, and more importantly, it is meant to help us see through the lies and conspiracies meant to entrap us and control us in our day. Gadiant robbers are one of the most important warnings about political corruption in the Book of Mormon. They are a group that appears in the Book of Helaman and Third Nephi. They weren't just robbers or thieves, no, they were more than ordinary criminals. They were organized secret societies that infiltrated government, business, and society with the express purpose of gaining power and wealth. The group was formed and named after a man named Gaddy Anton. He became the head of the group that was you that used secret oaths and conspiracies to gain control of large parts of the government and ultimately became the downfall of the entire civilization. Their activities included murder for political power, corruption among judges and leaders, secret alliances and secret oaths, organized crime and theft, manipulation of the legal system, leading to a two-tiered justice system. The scriptures describe them as a group that sought to overthrow freedom and replace it with total control. In the beginning of their story in the Book of Helaman, a man named Kishkumen murdered the chief judge in order to gain political influence. He wasn't acting alone. He belonged to a secret organization, a conspiracy bound by secret oaths. Gaddy Ampton took control of this group and raised them to the next level. He organized them, weaponized them, and they became an organized syndicate, a network, a hidden power structure operating behind society in all aspects of society. They operated with secret signs and words. They were loyal to the group above all else, above the law, above God, above everything in order to get power, wealth, and control. Helaman 621 warns us, they did have their signs and their words that they might distinguish a brother who had entered into their covenant. They sought leadership in political positions. They worked to become judges so they could rule and gain wealth. They manipulated the legal system. Does that does any of that sound familiar? It should. Eventually, they infiltrated the entire government. Helaman 639 says, They did obtain the sole management of the government. That's the point. When justice collapsed, corruption became normal, and the righteous were persecuted. Think about that for a moment, would you? The criminals became the leaders. Truth became dangerous. It didn't happen overnight. It happened gradually. Corruption rarely shows up like a summer thunderstorm. It creeps in like a fog in the dead of the night. This is where Moroni does the most interesting thing, as I said already. He stops the narrative and speaks directly to future generations. That includes us. He says that secret combinations seeking power and gain exist among all people. All people. All nations, all times. He states that if these secret societies grow unchecked, they will overthrow the freedom of nations. This isn't pointing at fingers at any particular party or group. Corruption is not partisan. It is specifically behind the scenes in all parties. It is the true deep state. Corruption is human. Wherever or whenever people place desire for power over personal principles and righteousness, you'll see corruption. Whenever money becomes more important than truth, you'll see corruption. When loyalty to the deep state becomes more important than justice and freedom, you'll see corruption. And that is when the seeds of the Gadientin robbers grow. The Romans weren't immune, the Greeks weren't immune, the Nephites weren't immune, the British aren't immune, the American society is not immune. You see it everywhere. So what can we do? This is where the conversation becomes important and most powerful. This is where I teach you how this is how to design and learn from the past to design the spiritual life that you desire. We learn from the past in order to not repeat it. The Book of Mormon never presents a problem without giving us a solution. The question isn't how do we fix the entire world? The question is how do we live in a corrupt world without becoming corrupt ourselves? The scriptures give us several answers. First, let's look at them and see how we can apply them in our lives. First, you need to become unbribable. The Gaddianton robbers thrived and lived because people could be bought. Money, status, and power were offered and people succumbed to them. Look what happens in our own governments. Representatives who should stand for their constituents for moral values will lie and promise anything. Only to, once they have power, stand for what their donors and their lobbyists desire. Individuals who cannot be bribed become impossible to control. Integrity is one of the most powerful forms of resistance to the Gadian robbers of our day. When your values are anchored in God rather than public approval, you become spiritually dangerous to corruption. Second, seek the truth relentlessly. President Russell M. Nelson stated on numerous occasions that in the last days, our days, you will not be able to tell what is true without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Look on social media today, and it is hard or impossible to tell truth from lie with AI stories being told. Corruption thrives in darkness. Truth brings light. You need to be willing to ask questions, study thoroughly, think critically, which is something that is not being taught anymore, critical thinking. Pray sincerely and finally to listen deeply. The scriptures invite us to seek wisdom and discernment. As corruption has become more embedded in society, people have become lazy thinkers. When people become lazy thinkers, letting others think for them, they become easy to control and manipulate. The mind guided by the Spirit, however, becomes difficult to deceive. Therefore, seek spiritual guidance and seek truth in order to not be deceived. Third, strengthen your family and community. The Gaddienton robbers thrive where social bonds and norms collapsed. When family systems fractured and societal bonds break, corrupt systems move in to fill the void. Strong families create strong societies. When children are taught integrity, honor, accountability, consequences for actions, faith, they become the kind of adults that resist corruption and favor honesty and integrity. Fourth, live by a higher law. The greatest defense against corruption is to be spiritually anchored in God. Living a higher law with divine principles of honesty, compassion, self-discipline, humility. Well that sounds a lot like the scout law to me and is a wonderful law to live by. Scout law says, On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country to obey the scout law, to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. And the law says, a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Living by these principles, these higher laws help you become immune to the temptations that corrupt systems throw at you. Not just saying the words, but trying to live by them. This is why the Book of Mormon emphasizes that we should have a conversion of our heart. Systems change when people change. Fifth, the quiet power of the righteous minority. Remember the conversation Abraham had with God about Sodom and Gomorrah? I talked about that in my last episode. He asks if the cities can be saved if he can find 50 righteous people, then 40, 30, 20, 10. The implication is profound. A small number of righteous individuals can stabilize an entire society. That's something deep and helpful. Why? Because it offers hope. You don't need to change millions of people. You just need to change a few committed individuals. Now this goes both ways. A few people, committed individuals, can damage an entire society. Look what's happening in Europe. And a few of the righteous can redeem an entire society. Men and women who choose integrity over convenience, faith over fear, truth over popularity can become a powerful force for good and for change. One thing is abundantly clear. You can build your life intentionally. You can build the life you desire. You can design a life guided by eternal principles. The world may fall into corruption. In fact, it is already there. History tells us the world will experience cycles of corruption. And we are in a cycle of corruption. However, you can build a life on faith, courage, integrity, and service. A life full of moral courage. When people do that, truth and light spread, influence grows, and corruption loses its grip. That's the whole point. The story of the Gaddy Anton robbers isn't just a warning about secret societies that exist among us. It's a reminder that civilizations are fragile. But it's also a reminder that individual righteousness matters much more than you may expect. The future of our society hinges on the quiet decisions of ordinary people, people like you, people like me, that repent daily and refuse to compromise their integrity. People who seek truth, people who follow our Heavenly Father, follow God. That is the invitation for all of us. Live with purpose, live with courage, build the life you want to design. You can do it. This is Todd Tox. Spirit by Design, where you design your spiritual life. You can avoid corruption by choosing and living according to sacred principles that we talked about today. As always, I'm your host, and I hope to see you next time, next week. Have a blessed day.
