Self-doubt is getting louder, and it’s not just a confidence problem. When your worth feels tied to comparison, followers, likes, and constant evaluation, anxiety and impostor syndrome start to feel “normal” even when something deep inside you knows it isn’t. We go straight at the real issue: when you don’t know who you are, you’ll doubt everything you do.

We talk about self-doubt as a spiritual identity crisis and why quick fixes like productivity hacks or mindset tricks can’t heal a wound that’s rooted in disconnection. We break down three common causes: forgetting your identity as a child of God, losing connection to the Spirit when stillness and prayer disappear, and misinterpreting struggle as proof you’re failing. Through scripture and lived experience, we reframe trials as a refiner’s fire, painful but purposeful, designed to strengthen rather than destroy.

Then we get practical. We share simple steps for spiritual realignment: ask God directly “Who am I to you?” and listen, replace noise with stillness, act in faith before you feel ready, and learn to discern the voice in your mind because not every thought you have is true. If comparison and social media have been feeding your stress, you’ll also hear a small daily challenge that can change everything.

The self-doubt epidemic. There is no official diagnosis of self-doubt, of a self-doubt epidemic, but I've seen with my own eyes, you know something isn't right. Something is off in the world. More people than ever are questioning themselves, second-guessing their paths, their selves, their abilities, their worth. More people are taking medication than ever for anxieties, fears, depression, quietly asking, Am I enough? The sheer number of people on anxiety medications is very clear proof that people are struggling. And it isn't just anxiety, it isn't just conf low confidence, it's an identity crisis. If you tried to solve an identity problem with productivity hacks, mindset tricks, or hustle culture, you'll just stay stuck because self-doubt and identity crisis are not just psychological, they're spiritual. Hence being on the Todd Talks Spirit by Design podcast. In other words, we have a spiritual identity crisis going on that shows up as keeping up with the Joneses, self-doubt, anxiety, stress, distress, and many other forms. This is Todd Talks, Spirit by Design, where I help you learn to listen and quiet the demons inside you to help you act on the revelation you receive in preparation for the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. One of the biggest drivers of such negative thinking and mental stress comes from the fact that we live in a world where you are constantly compared, you are endlessly evaluated, and you're told that your worth is something you earn. How many likes? How many followers, influencers, people selling their bodies and souls for likes for money, regretting the decisions later in life. So of course people feel behind. They feel like frauds. They have imposter syndrome. Of course they feel like they're not enough. Here's the deeper issue. When you don't know who you are, you will doubt everything you do. Imposter syndrome, if I could speak, will be your friend, companion, lover, and deceiver, all combined into one. That's not weakness, that's disconnection from the truth of who you really are. Modern revelation tells us that we are more than we realize. It doesn't just offer comfort, it connects you to your identity. In DNC 1810, it states, the worth of souls is great in the sight of God, not earned, not negotiated, not based on performance, declared like an anthem, unmin of unmodified, unadulterated, truth. The worth of souls is great in the eyes of God, because we are his children, literally. That means your life is not random. You are either you are not drifting, you are being worked on by God Himself. All those trials and struggles, you're being worked on. Scales, scabs, sins, and all, he thinks you are worthy of admiration because you're his child and he works on you to improve you. The root of self-doubt lies in forgetting who you are. There are three conditions that are presented. Forgetting your identity. For when you forget you are a child of God, you start measuring yourself by the world. And last I checked, the world isn't the best judge of character or morality for that matter, either. Second, you lose your connection to the spirit. When prayer, scripture study, and stillness disappear, when you put the things of God aside for worldly focus, clarity disappears as well. Third, when you misinterpret struggle, you think resistance means failure. You think problems, trials, difficulties in life are thrown at you because you mean nothing or that God's mad at you. You blame God. When often these trials are means to help you grow. We each have to go through a refiner's fire, often more than once. Now, what do I mean by that? When gold or silver are purified, they are put into a finer, a refiner's process, a refining process, with extreme temperature similar to that of the inside of a volcano. All impurities are burned away by the intense heat, and just the pure gold or silver remains and survives as liquid metal. In my life, I've been through a refiner's fire several times, and I can attest that it's never fun. But when I came through on the other side, I was stronger mentally and spiritually than before. And a refiner's fire is essential. We all need to pass through them. If you refuse the lessons, feel it's too hard, or walk away, that usually leads to disconnection and often leads to fighting against the spirit once you have you once embraced. If self-doubt is spiritual disconnection, then the solution is spiritual alignment or spiritual realignment. Here's how this looks in real life. Reclaim your identity through revelation. Stop asking the world who you are. They don't know. They don't know who they are. You ask God in prayer. Ask him directly, who am I to you? Then stop and listen. There's a lot irrevocably decreed in heaven. I've used this now three times in the last few episodes. And this is one of those things. When you ask, he answers in his time and in his way, but he will answer through the spirit. When you are honest, want to know, and you pause to listen, he will answer because the spirit speaketh truth. The spirit comforts, but his mission is to speak truth to your mind and give you personal revelation and inspiration to guide you through life. President Russell M. Nelson said, and I've quoted this umpteen times in the last few weeks and months, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost. We are getting to that point. We need to replace noise with stillness. Self-doubt gets louder in chaos. God speaks to us in stillness. As it says in the Bible in 1 Kings 19, the Lord was not in the wind or the earthquake or the fire, but in a still small voice. If your life is loud and chaotic, your direction will be unclear. If you fill your mind constantly with noise, spirit will be hard to hear. Third, you need to be willing to act before you are ready, before you feel ready. You see, faith is not the absence of doubt, it's movement despite it. We are taught in the book of Ether that we receive no witness until after the trial of our faith. Translation, full clarity, comes after action. In my last episode, I taught about using meditation, prayer, and vision boards to quiet the noise, listen to the spirit, and figure out the path forward. You can go listen to that one and learn a little bit more. Anchor your vision in who God says you are and what he's calling you to become. I guarantee you, what he's calling you to become is much greater than you can currently imagine. How many people do you know that have fallen away from their spirituality, lost themselves, fallen away from the church, etc., all because they let the noise and the search for likes, follows, and the admiration of the world pull them away from who they are in truth. Break the lie from the world that you are not enough. Comparison is the devil's play toy. The adversary works to distort your thinking. He tells you and you listen, you're not enough. You're behind. You're not as smart as dot dot dot. You're failing. He tells you these lies, and the natural man hears them and repeats them um teen thousand and millions of times until you believe them. The truth sounds much different to what the father of lies says. The truth sounds like you're learning. You're a child of God, you are becoming, you are doing the will of the Father, you are being tested, you are being refined, you are loved and appreciated. You are enough. You are enough. Discern the voice because not every thought you have is true. Of the 50 to 70,000 thoughts you have a day, surprise, surprise, not all of them are true. Shocking, I know. But we are the worst critics of ourselves, and we say things in our minds to ourselves that we would never say about any other person. That's why it's important to discern the difference in speech in your mind. You are enough. You are loved, you are growing. What if self-doubt isn't proof that you're failing? What if it's really just the result of being stretched and challenged and refined into something better? God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called. It feels like stretching. Sometimes it feels like doubt. That's when you start listening to the spirit to calm those fears and insecurities. Becoming qualified isn't destruction, it's construction. Think of a house renovation. What's the first thing that happens? Demo day. I love demo day. Demo day is my I love that day in those HGVT shows where they bring out the sledgehammers, tracts, tractors, dumpsters, rip out the walls, the floorboards, everything. They just tear it all down. Out with the old worn-out nastiness, and there's always nastiness and things that no longer serve. Rip it out of the home. Then they begin the reconstruction process. And if you think that about that in a personal way, when you're going through trials and thinking you suck or aren't enough, that's the demo day phase, and you need to get all that garbage out of your mind and focus on the reconstruction process because I guarantee that the end result is much better than your anxious mind can consider right now. So maybe there isn't an official self-doubt epidemic, but there is a generation forgetting who they are. And the cure is not more confidence lessons, it's more connection to source, more connection to God, more prayer, and more letting the grand builder and designer have his way with your soul. God, truth, identity, purpose. You connect with those four things and you truly begin to know who you are. Self-doubt won't disappear overnight. I'm not going to sugarcoat that. It will often reappear, but it loses authority in your life as you turn your life to God and let Him guide you. Prayer, repentance, listening, and acting on promptings. These turn your soul around. If you suffer from comparison, envy, self-doubt, etc., put down your phone, get off social media for at least five minutes a day and spend that time in stillness. Pray, meditate, listen, no phone, no noise, and ask God, who am I to you? Then listen. Because the answer to that question changes everything. This has been Todd Talks, and I've been through these trials many times. We all go through them, and I know and promise: if you'll do this simple thing, pray and listen, it will change everything in your life. Subscribe so you don't miss any new episodes.
