What Anchors You When Truth Feels Optional - Stand in Holy Places
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
When your “instruments” fail in the clouds, your body can swear you’re level while you’re actually turning into danger. I open with a real C-130 cockpit moment where two attitude indicators disagreed and the only way to survive was to trust the right reference. Then I connect that to modern spiritual life: identity confusion, anxiety, outrage culture, distraction, and dopamine addiction can make truth feel optional and emotions feel like facts.
The anchor is a warning and a promise from Doctrine and Covenants: you will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but if you are prepared, you will not fear. Preparation looks like standing in holy places and refusing to be moved. We talk about why holy places are more than temples (though temple covenants matter deeply) and how your home can become a holy place through prayer, scripture, Sabbath worship, better media standards, and protecting the Spirit at the center of family life.
I also share true examples of people who stood firm under pressure, from the Danish rescue of Jews in World War II to the 2,000 stripling warriors who were spiritually ready before the battle began. You’ll leave with a simple checklist to audit what spirit shapes your mind and your home, plus a direct challenge: remove one spiritually toxic influence, create one new holy habit, and turn your home into a sanctuary of peace. If this helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a five-star review.

Warning And Promise Of Preparation
SPEAKER_00When everything around you is shifting, where do you stand? When truth becomes negotiable, where do you anchor yourself? The Lord gave a warning for the last days that feels more urgent now than ever before. Stand ye in holy places and do not be moved. This is Todd Talks, where I help you design the spiritual life that you desire in preparation for the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In Doctrine and Covenants, 45 verses 26 and 35, we read, and that day shall come when you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, but if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. We hear of wars and rumors of wars, do we not? Every day, in the news, all around us. If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. This episode explores what holy places really are, why modern society is spiritually unstable, how covenant disciples create spiritual stability, true stories of people who stood firm under pressure, and practical ways to build holy places in your life, your home, and your heart. Real talk, eternal truth, as I said, this is Todd Talks, Spirit by Design.
Pilots Use Instruments In Fog
SPEAKER_00When the world loses its instruments, this is the first part. Have you ever lost your instruments? Have you ever had the electronics go out in your car, you lose, or your phone stops working. Well, a pilot flying through clouds cannot trust their feelings. So I've been there. On my inaugural flight as a aircraft commander of a C-130, going into Misawa, Japan, I had one attitude indicator showing us in a right turn, the co-pilot showing us in a left turn. When you can't trust your instruments and you're in the clouds, you have to figure out which one is correct. So without instruments, up feels down, fear can override truth, and disorientation becomes deadly. We call that the liens. You can get the liens in an airplane. Luckily, we have we had backup systems which showed that mine was jacked up and the copilots was correct. So we flew off of the copilot's instruments to get us to landing safely. We live in a generation that is experiencing identity confusion, moral instability, anxiety epidemics, constant noise and distractions. People yes, people around you, maybe even you, are spiritually flying blind. In 2 Nephi 28-20, it states, For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men. Who shall rage in the hearts of the children of men? The devil. He will be spiritually taking people and corrupting their souls, making them unable to feel the Holy Ghost, the influence of the Holy Ghost. And truth will become irrelevant. Emotions rule the day. You can see that today, where emotions overrule people's logic. Many of the arguments thrown out there on, especially in politics, they're used, the arguments don't make logical sense, but they make emotional sense to the people that are espousing them. So the President Nelson, Russell M. Nelson, stated the adversary is increasing his attacks on faith and upon us and our families at an exponential rate. So what do we do? Well, as the purpose of this episode is, we stand in holy places. Holy places are spiritual instruments. They help you know what is true when the storm clouds roll in.
Why Society Feels Spiritually Unstable
SPEAKER_00So, a true story about the Danish Jews during World War II. In 1943, Nazi forces planned to arrest and deport Denmark's Jewish population. Ordinary people, fishermen, pastors, families, neighbors, ordinary citizens risked their lives to hide and ferry thousands of Jews to safety in Sweden. Why? Because moral courage still existed. Their homes became holy places. See, holy places are not just the temples that we talk about. In fact, we're instructed that our homes should be holy places. Holy places are the homes where truth is defended. They're the dinner tables where prayer happens, the bedrooms where people kneel in prayer. They're wherever families refuse to bow down to evil. In Moses 762, we read, and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood. So not only is darkness sweeping the earth, but God's also going to send truth and righteousness to sweep the earth. The divide between those that seek after truth, actual truth, and those that live in darkness is growing exponentially.
What Holy Places Really Are
SPEAKER_00So what is a holy place? I already gave a short answer. Doctrine Covenants 109.8 tells us to organize ourselves, prepare every needful thing, and establish a house, a holy house, a house of order. Temples are where we go to make covenants with God, where revelation happens. They are houses of the Lord where He can abide. We receive protection and spiritual alignment when we attend when we go. President Everzera Taft Benson once said, the temple is an ever-present reminder that God intends the family to be eternal. So in my Memorial Day episode, I talked about how, just very briefly, how this life is not the end, right? We continue on. And we can be together as families forever.
Temple Covenants And Holy Homes
SPEAKER_00Second, the holy place should be our home. In the family, a proclamation to the world states that the family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to his eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony and to be reared by a father and the mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By design design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners, I added the emphasis. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed. Every home would be a holy place. A place of prayer, scripture study, media standards, Sabbath worship, protecting the spirit in the home, these things would all happen if we all abided by those principles.
Creating A Holy Place Within
SPEAKER_00So another place that can be a holy place is wherever you are. If your heart and your mind are in tune with Christ, in tune with the gospel, then wherever you are can be a holy place. Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly, we are told, in Doctrine Covenants 121.45. What are things that we can do to align our mind and heart with the gospel of Jesus Christ? Well, according to many of the episodes I've done: meditation, prayer, spiritual discipline, repentance, guarding your thoughts. These are all ways that we can align our soul with the gospel. You know, I've done episodes on meditation specifically. I've done episodes on prayer specifically. The spiritual discipline to make good choices. Repentance. If we're not repenting every day, we're not doing it right. I need to repent every day. I'm a sinner. I know I'm a sinner. Every single one of us on earth are sinners. If I'm not repenting every day, then I'm just shifting my allegiance toward darkness. Because repentance helps bring us back towards the light.
Stripling Warriors And The Modern Fight
SPEAKER_00So in the Book of Mormon, the 2,000 Stripling Warriors in Amma, in the Book of Alma, stood in holy places long before the battle. If you don't know who the 2,000 stripling warriors were, their parents had made a covenant that they would never lift up arms against anyone again. They would never battle lest they lest all their previous sins come back to them. Well, they had 2,000 sons that had not made that covenant. They were probably young, 13 to 18 or 19, maybe. And the Nephites, who were protecting the people of Ammon, where these stripling warriors came from, were being subjected to very tough battle and situations, being attacked by an overwhelming force. But when asked if they were ready to give battle, the striplum warriors told Helam and their commander, we would not go against our brethren to battle. And we have no desire to fight. However, we know that we are needed. This is me paraphrasing all of this. We know that we are needed. And so we go to battle to fight with our brethren, the Nephites. And they said, We do not doubt our mothers knew it, meaning that their mothers knew that they would be protected if they just trusted in the Lord. So these stripling warriors stood in holy places because they trusted God, they made covenants, they refused to succumb to fear, and their mothers taught them the faith to believe in God. In Alma 56, 47 it says they had been taught by their mothers that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them. And here's the key. After multiple battles, not a single one died. When thousands of others were killed, not a single one of those two thousand warriors fell in battle. In today's modern world, the battlefield can include pornography, confusion, addiction, cynicism, social pressures, spiritual apathy. This war is spiritual. The war, everything you see going on out in the world, it's a spiritual battle between right and wrong, good and evil, agency and force, freedom and socialism, communism. Holy places create holy people before the battle ever begins. So we are surrounded by endless distractions, outrage culture. That happens like I talked about in the beginning. People are outraged. They don't, their arguments don't make logical sense, but for politics, and dare say it, they hate Trump, therefore they don't think about what they're doing or saying. Outrage culture, it's all built on emotion. No logic, no truth behind it. It's all emotion. So we are surrounded, as I said, by outrage culture, endless distraction, sexual confusion, collapsing families, anti-faith messaging. I see more and more of this online, people messaging against Christianity, messaging against the Church of Jesus Christ, the Larry Saints. Dopamine addiction. How many of us struggle with the dopamine addiction of video games or social media? Just need that one more hit. Five more minutes. In Second Nephi, we're warned. Others will he pacify and lull them away into carnal security. So President Russell M. Nelson remained calm during dangerous surgeries. He was a heart surgeon. Because he trusted eternal principles over panic. His spiritual steadiness was developed long before emergencies happened. Pilots, like myself, train long before we ever hit turbulence. Disciples prepare before the storm arrives.
A Checklist For Daily Stability
SPEAKER_00So here's a little checklist to determine if you're in a holy place. Whether it be right where you're at, your home, the temple? Is there prayer? Scripture study? Stillness. Repentance? Good music. Gratitude. It's a daily checklist. How about weekly? Do you worship on the Sabbath? Do you go to church? Do you partake in the sacrament and renew your baptismal covenants? Do you attend the temple? Do you have family councils? So ask yourself, what enters my mind daily? What spirit dominates my home? Spirit of anger? Spirit of faith. What voice influences my identity? Again. Spirit of emotion, of anger. Spirit of faith, calm. Doctrine Covenants 9721 teaches us that Zion, where we all want to be, is the pure in heart. Standing in holy places does not mean hiding from the world. It means carrying your light into the darkness, shining brightly, standing, the city set on a hill, the candle in the dark. It means remaining spiritually anchored. It means attending church, strengthening your testimony, giving, helping others, refusing to compromise your morals. Elder Neil A. Maxwell said, in a declining society, the righteous don't simply survive, they shine. So when a pilot loses visibility, we trust the instruments. Maintain our altitude, stay on course, and avoid panic. That is what happens when you make a covenant and keep it. The covenant path is God's flight plan. Stand ye in holy places and be not moved. Holy places are built intentionally, protected fiercely, and maintained daily. You don't accidentally become spiritually strong. In fact, I've uh I've likened in the past your spirituality and your faith to a ladder rather than a linear line. You can either climb up daily or you can descend, but staying in one place, your arms get tired and you start to descend. You do not accidentally become spiritually strong. You become strong through covenants, consistency, repentance, prayer, obedience, and staying close to Jesus Christ.
This Week’s Challenge And Closing
SPEAKER_00This week I challenge you to remove one spiritually toxic influence from your life. Create one new holy habit. Spend time in the temple if you can make it to it, if there's one near you, and you're worthy to go. Turn your home into a sanctuary of peace. That is one thing we all can do. And ask yourself daily: what spirit is shaping me? What spirit is influencing me? The storm is real. The divide is happening. It's deepening. God has always protected the people who stand in holy places. Stay grounded. Stay aligned. Stay close to Christ. Keep climbing that ladder towards holiness. I know you can do it. It's a challenge we all need to face. This is Todd Talks, Spirit by Design. And I hope you have another blessed day. As always, leave a five star review. Helps me in the algorithms to get it shown to more people. Help others to strengthen their spiritual life. And as always, like I said, once before, have a blessed day.
